family economy

SUMMARY OF TODAY’S PODCAST

Family economics. Not a term that most people in our day are used to hearing. But it’s an idea that has been around since the early days of the bible. Families can work together in Christian harmony to not only support themselves, but to be a huge blessing to the world around them. Today’s conversation is a discussion of the issue of family economy with author, pastor, and radio host Kevin Swanson. He’s spearheading a new movement focusing on this idea of family economics, including hosting some conferences on the subject in 2013. Check out the links below.

    Thanks for the shout-out, Carey! I was listening to the podcast and all of a sudden heard my name, haha.
    I like the thoughts of family economy, but I see it slightly differently. It seems that ministry or money-making activities are seen as the main thrust of the economy. What about just kids doing chores or taking care of the house or doing the dishes?
    I don’t think it really has to be a particular money-making activity for it to be a family economy. But that’s just my two cents.

      @Loren Pinilis Glad to pass along the news about your stuff… the LORD is using it! Yep, I see the economy a bit more broadly than he does too… but what made it helpful for me was thinking through the way a family can help others INSIDE their own family…

    Very intriguing! I agree with a lot he was saying but I agree with you in that I think it’s broader. But I am also challenged in that I need to get more involved with our business that my Hubby has and look for ways to help him so it can run more smoothly. Good podcast! I am going to have to listen to that again to get things I missed! Thank you! Oh quick question on the podcast…( I think I know the answer but just wanted to help others who might not) I felt a little like he was implying that the wife/mother should be working to make money whether inside or outside the home to pull some weight. What is your thoughts?

      @Erin Hardee Hey Erin, thanks for the comments and question.

      Hmmmm….. Kevin “may” have been implying that, but I didn’t pick up on it if he did. I don’t want to put words in his mouth…

      As for what I think, I believe that biblically the mother’s FIRST and most important responsibilities are these, in this order – 1. God/self, 2. Hubby/marriage, 3. Kids, 4. Home.

      IF all those can be done well (in a way that honors the LORD) then I see no issue with her going outside the home to bring in some $$. But the “IF” of that statement is the important part. It’s an issue of priorities… and I think too many moms and dads default to the culture’s standard of “2 incomes” and don’t thing and pray it through according to the Bible’s instruction.

      Regarding the “family economy” bit… it’s not all about $$ either. I could see the family working together on a garden, making clothes for the family, etc. being HUGE contributions to the family economy. Blessings!

        @Carey Green
        Thank you for the clarification! I don’t want to put words in his mouth either but I thought I would clarify just in case anyone else got the feeling and got confused. I agree with everything you are saying. Thanks!
