strong willed children

Strong willed children need…

Posted by Carey

Strong willed children need stronger-willed parents.

You are the parent for a reason….

You have:

Experience

Maturity (hopefully)

Wisdom (again, hopefully)

Relationship with the LORD

and knowledge about the world

that your child does not have.

Let that sink in. Really deeply.

God has made you the parent to lead your child in the way that he/she SHOULD go (Proverbs 22:6)… and you as the parent are to determine what that way is (with the LORD’s help).

You have to be convinced of that when dealing with your strong willed children.

strong willed children

When your child exerts their strong will…

They are doing so out of…

Inexperience

Immaturity

Foolishness (Proverbs 22:15)

No relationship with the LORD (probably, depending on their age)

Little knowledge about the world

Who is best equipped to make choices about their well-being? Them or you? – The answer should be clear.

All I’m trying to say is that you shouldn’t let your child run the show just because it’s hard to deal with them pushing back on your authority. You are responsible to guide them, to train them up in the way they should go… which means you should assess what that way is and be proactive in seeing that it happens. Part of that training will be equipping them to begin making their own wise decisions – in time, and as they are capable.

When you are dealing with strong willed children, you have GOT to be a stronger-willed parent… because you really do know best for them.

Well, lucky for us (or not), my wife and I have incredibly strong wills. Wonder where our kids get it from? Actually, I’m strong willed. My wife is stubborn. Haha 🙂

Amen Brother!  I also have a strong-willed child who loves to push the boundaries.  God has really stretched and grown me when it comes to my parenting style.  You will often hear me muttering under my breath “firm yet loving; firm yet loving” 🙂
