5 reasons a Christian man is a humble man

A humble man = a Christian man – 5 reasons why…

This post is for the Christian man in your life. If you’re a Christian man… then it’s for you.

It doesn’t matter whether you are:

  • Married or single
  • Young or old
  • Accomplished or just starting out
  • Mature in your faith, or a brand new Christian

The Bible outlines very clear distinctives that characterize a Christian man… and one of the most important is humility.

Read through this post prayerfully… asking the LORD to reveal to you any ways you’ve bought into a wrong idea of what a man is to be.

The words “humble” and “man” aren’t often used in the same sentence in this day and age.

That’s because our culture encourages men to be….

humble man

  • Cocky
  • Smart mouthed
  • Rebellious
  • Sexually driven

Which are all sad distortions of what it truly means to be a man.

A real man is the opposite of all those things, and a Christian man is to be especially different.

Because of Christ, a Christian man is a humble man. Here are 5 reasons why…

#1) A Christian man knows that he’s under God’s authority.

One of the greatest examples of this we can find in the scriptures was John the Baptist. Jesus Himself said that among those born of women, John was the greatest (Matthew 11:11).

But John did not see his appointment as the forerunner of Christ as a thing of great importance. He knew that his role was to be submitted to the plan of God.

He said of Jesus,

He must increase, but I must decrease. – John chapter 3, verse 30“

THAT is the attitude of a Christian man… he seeks the advancement of God’s purposes far above his own (Matthew 6:33). He is a humble man.

#2) A Christian man wants to receive God’s grace, and God only gives it to the humble.

To be proud before God is one of the most foolish things we could ever do, because God is perfect. In light of that we have nothing to be proud about.

A Christian man knows he has need of God’s help, God’s grace. And he knows that God’s grace is only given to the humble…

God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. – James chapter 4, verse 6.

What a silly thing it would be to put yourself in a position of opposition toward God… and to have God in opposition to you!

It’s even sillier if you call yourself by the name of Christ (Christian).

#3) A Christian man is called to be a leader, and leaders must be humble

The LORD calls men to lead the way, in their homes and in the church. But the kind of leaders Jesus intends Christian men to be are not the demanding, heavy-handed type.

No, a Christian leader is to be a humble man…

And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.”  – Luke chapter 22, verses 25 and 26
  • He’s humble enough to care for those he is leading.
  • That care leads him to serve them.
  • That service equips and empowers them to faithfully follow Christ.

#4) A Christian man knows that his role of leadership does not make him “better” than others.

Since a Christian man knows that his role of leadership is for the sake of serving others, he sees that others are valuable to God’s kingdom work.

This is especially true when it comes to the members of his own family.

Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. – First Peter chapter 3, verse 7

Notice how the man is to think about the leadership he provides to his wife:

  • As the leaders, I am to honor my wife.
  • I am to remember that she is an heir of life, just like I am.

#5) A Christian man follows the example of Christ… and Christ was a humble man.

Christ, being God, had every right to be proud. In fact, He’s the only person who ever lived who could have been “rightly” proud.

But He wasn’t. He was a humble man.

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. –  Philippians chapter 2, verses 5 through 7

A Christian man is a man like Jesus. And that means he’s a humble man.

What steps can YOU take to move toward a more humble attitude as a Christian man?
