Overcoming anxiety about your children

Overcoming Anxiety is not an easy thing.

I’m not going to tell you it is.

Especially when it comes to things having to do with your children.

We live in a wicked world, and there’s a TON of things that could go wrong for them.

As their mom or dad, it’s natural that you don’t want those things to happen.

But let me ask you a “no-brainer” question…

Would you intentionally do something you KNEW would bring evil to your child’s life?

Of course not.

overcoming anxiety about your children

No sane parent would.

But according to the scriptures, we do EXACTLY THAT when we worry over our kids.

… do not fret, it leads only to evil. – Psalm 37:8

Read it again carefully and see where fretting, worrying, and anxiety lead…

OVERCOMING ANXIETY

Let that soak in…

That means that not only does your anxiety over your children…

  • Stress you out
  • Give you ulcers
  • Cause emotional turmoil
  • Increase the stress levels in your home
  • Amplify your feelings of helplessness
  • Fill your life with angst

…it also brings EVIL into your life (and the lives of your children).

Why?

  1. Anxiety fuels your own desire to control things… and you CAN’T control things.
  2. Worry stimulates your fears… and the LORD commands you NOT to fear (Luke 12:32).
  3. Fretting makes the problems seem bigger than God.

That last one is the real issue… because that’s where the root of our problem is…

Instead of trusting God to help us overcome our anxiety

we allow our anxiety to overcome God.

When we fear, fret, and worry – we are saying,

“God is not big enough to handle this.”

“This is beyond His ability.”

“He must have made a mistake.”

God is on the throne… He is sovereign… and His ways are good.

But worry provokes your feelings to such a point that you don’t believe it… even though it is the truth.

You have got to learn to preach to yourself.

You have got to learn to take God at His word, and to trust it to be true.

It may seem the worst is happening, and it may be.

But God ordains, uses, and transforms the worst into His best – every time.

Overcoming anxiety is about learning to trust God… who is ULTIMATELY trustworthy.

The truth will set you free to…

  • know He’s working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28).
  • set your mind on what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, etc. (Philippians 4:8).
  • understand that you are more than a conqueror through God, who loves you (Romans 8:37).
  • believe that He that is in you (Jesus) is greater than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4).
  • know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness… and when you let steadfastness have its full effect, you will be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing (James 1:3-4).

Our faith must be real, especially in the hardest times.

If it doesn’t hold us then, when will it?

Your “overcoming anxiety” homework…

  • Write down the 5 bullet points above.
  • Meditate on one per day (in the morning, at lunch, when you take a break, as you drive, etc.).
  • Memorize them.
  • Begin learning to preach them to yourself when you begin to become anxious.
